Bird cake—so named because its shape resembles a bird in ight—is a popular traditional pastry in the Hakka township of Xikou， Chiayi. The bird cake was first invented in the early days duringmthe Ghosts’ Festival because local people did not want to kill animals for sacri¬ces. It has now become a characteristic local delicacy.
