Since the 1960s, Puli had become the place of major natural lacquer production in Taiwan. Most of the hard work, such as growing lacquer trees and collecting raw lacquer were handled by local Hakka people. At the time, the amount of Long Nan’s natural lacquer export to Japan had reached thirty tons per year. In times, many lacquer companies from other places of Taiwan dropped out of the Japan market due to Japan’s high quality demand. The founder of Long Nan, Mr. Xu A-Long, strongly believed that Puli lacquer had the best quality and transparency in the world. He led his staffs in improving their techniques and the quality of the lacquer, in 1963, Long Nan eventually reoccupied the Japan market. The glory of 7,000 years Chinese lacquer artwork finally enhanced and glorified in Puli, a Taiwan Hakka town.
